How to use jumper cables

Many a times the drivers have to deal with cars that do not just seem to start. No matter how many time you turn the ignition the engine does not start. One of the common reasons for this problem is low charged battery. This may happen due to certain reasons and contrary to belief any season of the year. The one thing that can help you come out of this situation is jumper cables. There are insulated wires with alligator clips on sides. Jumper cable comes in different lengths though the basic method of using them to connect the batteries is same.

Jumper cables will help in charging a low charged battery with help from a fully charged battery from another car. For this it is essential that both cars are standing close to each other. They should be side by side or must be parked facing each other. The red clip of the jumper cables should now be connected to the terminal of the dead battery which is marked with a positive sign. This is the positive terminal and may have a plastic cover which needs to be removed as the red clip has to be attached to the metal part. Now in a similar fashion the other red clip will now have to be connected to positive terminal of the battery which is fully charged. A positive terminal can be segregated from a negative one as the former is slightly larger.

After connecting the positive terminals now the negative terminals need to be connected. The black clip which is adjacent to the red clip which is attached to the charged battery will now be connected with the negative terminal of the same fully charged battery. Like the red ones it also has to be connected with the metal part of terminal. The other black clip needs to be grounded which implies clipping it to any piece of metal attached with the car engine with the dead battery. All the connection should be secure and now the car with the charged battery needs to be started. Few sparks from the jumper cables are normal. If only the dead battery is the problem and connections are secure the dead car will start soon.

After this the connections have to be removed in reverse order. The connections which were made last need to be removed first so the black clip grounded on to car will be removed first and the red clip mounted first will be removed last. Jumper cables can help immensely and should be always carried along with proper knowledge on how to use them.
